Químico y fotógrafo pionero británico. En 1840 desarrolló la calotipia, un antiguo proceso fotográfico que incorporaba mejoras sobre la
daguerrotipia. Dicho proceso usaba un negativo fotográfico del cual se podían hacer múltiples copias. En 1835 publicó su primer artículo documentando un descubrimiento fotográfico: el negativo en papel. Su obra
The Pencil of Nature (1844–46) fue el primer libro con ilustraciones fotográficas. Talbot publicó también muchos artículos sobre matemática, astronomía y física.
